A website where we’ll be posting a poem/poet a day, plus a recommendation from the poet of a book of poems they’ve loved. Check in with us everyday here; Nicole Steinberg kicked us off today!

Did you know that Jeanine Deibel’s In the Grave is out NOW?

Image

Boys boys boys, in the grave and in each other’s faces, pummeling and beating and traversing the land like they once owned it and mean to take it back with bloody fists or at least pretend to, or at least leave it scarred up and sweaty for the meek to inherit.

excerpt:

“After beating those boys after punching their faces with bats until the idea of face became blurry after huffing clouds against the sky doubled over we debated whether to drag them out of sight or bury our boots between slats of rib taking turns until we were forced to stop from the coughing to catch our breath and leave. We would come back for them Ty told me we would clean up our mess but that rarely happened.”

Purchase In the Grave here. Coming later this month: Carrie Hunter’s Inversion Twilight.

Subscription Winner + macey [triolets]

Teddy_Bear

Welcome to 2013, readers! Birds of Lace is ecstatic and maybe even wonderfully hysterical about our 2013 release schedule. Our first release of 2013 will be Seth Oelbaum‘s macey [triolets], for which there will be a pre-order page next week. Pre-orders will come with an emailed PDF from Oelbaum of a teddy bear lookbook that accompanies his texts. Here’s a sample poem from the chapbook:

dragging our holey shop bags on sunny sidewalks,
teddy and i are crazy for cure that reams.
crackers, creams, combs — mommy steams up for price drops.
dragging our holey shop bags on sunny sidewalks,
we ask sunny, “sunny, why are you a cock?”
if you get, a comb you’ll get for unclean mien.
dragging our holey shop bags on sunny sidewalks,
teddy and i are crazy for cure that reams.

TWINS now available for pre-order! Plus, half-subscriptions & chance to win a 2013 subscription

svhcameo

Megan Milks’ TWINS is now available for pre-order! In TWINS Megan Milks enlists the Wakefield twins of Sweet Valley fame to participate in a choose-your-own-adventure, slippery and slidey and not quite like the books you read as an adolescent. Jessica or Elizabeth? How will the story end? Try each option on for size and see what happens; twinned blondes in blue eyes never seemed so spooky. Go here to purchase and read an excerpt; TWINS will ship in mid-December.

Additionally, anyone who makes a purchase from our etsy shop this month will be entered to win a 2013 Birds of Lace subscription, which you can use for yourself or gift to someone else! (U.S. folks only- apologies, but international shipping is expensive.) We’ve also added a half-subscription for anyone who wants some of our forthcoming chapbooks, but not all; the half-subscription includes six chapbooks and a copy of Anna Joy Springer’s The Birdwisher.

Last month we tried to raise some money for the Ali Forney center; sadly, we didn’t have any sales last month (sad face.) Hopefully that means that people were just donating directly, which you can still do here.

Retiring titles

To make way for all the new titles being published soon, Birds of Lace is going to be retiring a few of our older titles from physical publication. Niina Pollari’s Fabulous Essential and Christine Vi-Van Nguyen’s  blood and jasmine when i dreamed her will, at the end of this month, no longer be in print, though we will make them available as free downloadable PDFs on the website. However, if you’d still like a physical copy before they disappear forever, we are offering both titles for half-price through September. Visit our etsy page to purchase!
