Finery, now online and accepting submissions

Birds of Lace’s journal of art and literature, Finery, will now be an online publication. Issues 1-7 were small edition chapbooks, which were beautiful and lovingly made, but this new format will allow the work to be read by many, for free, and will also allow us to accept rolling submissions and post them as often as we’d like. Additionally, it will now be easy to add media such as music and film to the publication.

Submissions will be rolling and are open as of now. Send your writing, visual art, films, music, or any other media under the sun to fineryjournal@gmail.com. Please attach writing as an rtf or word .doc and images as jpgs. If you are sending film you can send a link or query about Birds of Lace uploading it to our vimeo channel. As with all our publications, Finery will publish those who self-identify as women and/or queer. To get an idea of our aesthetic, please visit the “Finery” page of our website, where pieces from past issues are available. We love to have our innards twisted, squeezed and stroked by the work we publish.

Please pass along the call! We can’t wait to read your work and share it.

Call for Chapbook Submissions

Birds of Lace Press seeks spooky, gorgeous, tainted and taloned texts for chapbook publication. 12-25 pages (give or take a few) in any genre or hybrid creation thereof, including pen and ink drawings. We love that which hurts so good, tips the scales of our guts, makes the sky spit glass and the ground leak fluids. For examples and general aesthetic of work we’ve published, please visit: http://birdsoflace.wordpress.com/chapbooks/

But don’t be deterred if your work isn’t reflected there- we also love surprises. Please email as an RTF attachment to birdsoflace@gmail.com by March 31st, 2012. No bio. required; do take note that Birds of Lace exclusively publishes those who are women and/or queer-identified.

Please re-post/blog/facebook etc!

BoL Open Reading Period for Chapbooks

From now until Dec. 31st Birds of Lace will be reading chapbook manuscripts for possible publication. What we most desire to read is the immprobable, the hysterically feminist, queered grotesques with muddy boundaries and sloppy hearts of integrity. What we want is literature that you’d have difficulty publishing elsewhere because it’s too disgusting, too personal, too loud and too ferocious. We like a sick sense of humor and sly wit. Some authors we love are Anna Joy Springer, Rebecca Brown, James Baldwin, Daphne Gottlieb, Maggie Nelson, Cathy Park Hong, Emily Dickinson, Willa Cather, Judy Budnitz, Bertha Harris and Sarah Vap. But if your work doesn’t align with any of those people, send it anyway: we like to be surprised.

Please email 12-30 pages of fiction, poetry, cross-genre, non-fiction, lyrical essays or any combination thereof as an RFT attachment to birdsoflace@gmail.com. A short introduction would be lovely, if BoL is unfamiliar with your work, but a publication history isn’t necessary. If you’re unfamiliar with Birds of Lace, visit our Etsy page to read excerpts and information on previous publications.
